Johanna Calle
In this series, Johanna Calle reflects on Afro-Colombian histories through a restrained visual language that combines drawing, material sensitivity, and research-based inquiry. Using delicate wire and carefully structured compositions, the works evoke systems of land, labor, and social organization shaped by colonial and post-colonial forces. Rather than illustrating specific narratives, Calle focuses on perspective itself as a political and cultural position.
The title Negra signals an engagement with Afro-Colombian presence and experience, addressing histories that have often been marginalized or rendered invisible. Fragility and precision coexist in the works, echoing both vulnerability and resilience. Informed by archival sources, legal frameworks, and lived histories, Calle’s compositions invite slow looking and careful reading, allowing questions of identity, memory, and justice to emerge through subtle visual means rather than explicit representation.
