José Vera Matos
The Act of Reading explores reading not only as intellectual activity but as visual and physical experience. Created in graphite and stylograph on bamboo paper, the drawing consists of tightly woven handwritten traces that gradually dissolve into abstract structures.
Vera Matos challenges the stability of language by pushing script toward visual density. Words become texture; text becomes image. The act of reading transforms into an act of seeing. Suspended between semantic meaning and graphic presence, the work reflects on how language shapes perception and cultural memory. The surface unfolds as a meditative field where text no longer communicates in a conventional sense but instead reveals its material and rhythmic qualities.
