José Vera Matos
Part of the ongoing Poetics of Relation series, this drawing translates philosophical reflection into visual structure. Executed on bamboo paper with stylograph, the work consists of dense, rhythmic accumulations of fine lines that evoke handwritten text while resisting full legibility.
The title references Édouard Glissant’s concept of relation as a network of intersecting identities and cultures rather than a single origin. Vera Matos transforms this idea into a visual field where marks function simultaneously as language and abstraction. Meaning oscillates between readability and pure form. The organic surface of bamboo paper enhances the tension between fragility and structure, reinforcing the work’s meditative presence. Rather than presenting language as fixed authority, the drawing proposes it as fluid, relational, and continuously unfolding.
