Juergen Staack

Juergen Staack is a German conceptual artist born in 1978 in Doberlug-Kirchhain, East Germany, now based in Düsseldorf. He is known for his minimalist, interdisciplinary approach, often exploring the boundaries between photography, sound, and language. His works frequently engage with themes of communication, perception, and the transformation of visual images into sound. Staack studied photography at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under notable mentors such as Thomas Ruff and Christopher Williams.

His projects explore, among other things, how images can be transformed into sound and how this auditory information can be reimagined in visual form, raising questions about the nature of representation and communication in a media-saturated world. He often uses different languages in his work, as in his exploration of the Ainu language of Japan in Eisflüstern (Ice Whispering).

Staack is also a founding member of the artist collective FEHLSTELLE, which engages in public space interventions, further exploring his interest in the social dimensions of art and communication. His works can be found in prestigious collections such as the Museum Folkwang and the Bundeskunstsammlung (Federal Collection of Contemporary Art in Germany). Staack has received numerous awards, including the ars viva Prize for Visual Arts and had residencies in Tokyo and Seoul.

His artistic investigations challenge traditional perceptions of art, using multimedia formats to engage audiences in active interpretation of his works, which often leave room for chance and public participation.

In 2024 the artist had multiple exhibitions highlighting his interdisciplinary and conceptual approach to art. One of his notable exhibitions, UNSERDEUTSCH, was held at the Konrad Fischer Gallery in Berlin from January to April 2024. This solo exhibition explored themes related to the endangered language "Unserdeutsch," spoken by a small community in Papua New Guinea. Staack incorporates portraits and sound installations, engaging with issues of identity, language extinction, and cultural memory.

Another significant exhibition is Untimely Resonance, presented at the Loop Alternative Art Space in Seoul, South Korea, from September to October 2024. This group exhibition focuses on sound and its cultural, historical, and individual resonance. Staack’s contribution, alongside other international artists, bridges auditory and visual art forms, blending modern Korean history with personal narratives.
In addition, Staack is part of Welt anschauen at Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz from July to October 2024, which explores current trends in post-photography and digital culture, pushing the boundaries of traditional photography into conceptual realms.
