"LAYALA calls us to look beyond the surface,
for every surface is only a threshold."
An image of Europa, one of Jupiter’s icy moons, presents a world covered in frozen crust crossed by cracks and ridges. Despite its frozen appearance, scientific research suggests a vast ocean hidden beneath its surface—a dynamic system invisible from the outside.
Beside it appears a sculpture of General Tjahapimu, a key figure in a political transformation in ancient Egypt. Although the statue stands in stillness, the historical figure played a decisive role in a shift of power that placed his son on the throne as Pharaoh Nectanebo II.
The third image presents long-exposure photography, a visual trace of light in motion.
In each of these images the visible surface conceals a more complex system of movement, power, or change.
Between a frozen moon, a political body, and an image of moving energy, the work suggests thinking of surfaces as thresholds—places where information becomes only partially visible.
