This work connects two sources of imagery distant in time and scale: an Egyptian lion-headed goddess carved in ivory from the 18th century BCE discovered in Acemhöyük in Anatolia, and an image of Earth at night as seen from space.The ivory fragment depicts a kneeling figure with the head of a lion and a human body. Such imagery was influenced by Egyptian iconography in which lioness goddesses represented protective and benevolent forces. The figure holds a flowering plant stem, her arm bent in a gesture of reverence. Traces of gold indicate that the surface was once gilded.
Opposite, it appears Earth at night, a planetary view in which the lights of cities trace the network of human activity across the planet. From this distance, these small lights become a kind of human script spread across the surface of the world.
An ancient figure kneeling before a greater power and a view from space in which humanity appears as a constellation of lights coexist here. Between them opens a space where signs of ancient ritual and signs of contemporary human activity echo one another.
