Harm van den Dorpel´s reads How we became Posthuman by N. Katherine Hayles. In How We Became Posthuman, Katherine Hayles explores how information in the digital age became separated from its material carrier and the cultural and technological implications this has on our understanding of what it means to be human. Van den Dorpel will present this significant work and discuss how it influences his own thinking and artistic practice.
Afterwards van den Dorpel will give an exhibition tour through his current exhibition ANGLES MORTS at our gallery.

Clara Runge is a curator at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Kalsruhe. Among other exhibitions, she is part of the curatorial team for the current exhibition ‘(A)I Tell You, You Tell Me. Three Encounters for Humans/Machines’, which takes part in the current discourse on AI and offers the opportunity to enter into dialogue and exchange with algorithmic systems.

June 29, 2024 at 2 PM I Judith Csiki and Johanna Calle

The Colombian artist Johanna Calle is characterised by her innovative approach to drawing and her multidisciplinary practice. Her works refer to traditional learning methods, cultural practices and historical events. She creates connections between past and present, questioning existing norms and systems in a visually striking and intellectually stimulating way.

Judith Csiki is a curator at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, where she is responsible in particular for the "Written Art Collection". She is part of the  Bayerischen Staatsgemäldesammlung, which manages important art institutions in Bavaria. Csiki is an experienced art historian with proven expertise in the fields of cultural transfer and Islamic art history. In her work, she often explores the intersections between historical and contemporary art practices and seeks to create dialogues between different time periods and artistic approaches.

Munich's art scene is celebrating the beginning of the spring season with a joint kick-off of events. As part of the VO Spring program, we offer a special talk: "Art meets economy – how companies collect today" Kirsten Schrick in conversation with Hanna Marie Bruhn.

Hanna Marie Bruhn, an expert on "Corporate Collections," has scientifically engaged with the topic and published a first comprehensive empirical publication. Kirsten Schrick is a consultant, trainer, and coach who has accompanied individuals and economic, cultural and social organizations for over 20 years. We look forward to an exciting conversation on the topic of corporate collecting.

ARTIST TALK

March 6, 2024 at 7 PM | Jovana Reisinger and Hannes Heinrich

In a conversation on the occasion of Hannes Heinrich's solo exhibition "EVEN DEMONS HAVE DEMONS," long-time friends Jovana Reisinger, author, director, and visual artist, as well as Hannes Heinrich, painter, reflected on their shared artistic practice.

Both artists have been connected for a long time and have worked in various creative fields. They discussed the parallels in their professional developments and revealed that they continuously grapple with the question of where the boundary lies between their artistic and personal selves.

Jovana Reisinger employs essayistic and columnistic approaches in her work as an author and also utilizes social media to amplify her artistic voice. Hannes Heinrich, on the other hand, primarily focuses on painting, where he finds expressive outlet. His works are characterized by ongoing reinterpretations, reactions, and painterly decisions.

Despite their different artistic modes of expression, both artists reveal their essence and thoughts in their works. They expose their personal perspectives and make them publicly accessible.

January 17, 2024 at 7 PM | Gregor Hildebrandt

The artist talk with Gregor Hildebrandt takes place in the context of the current exhibition "LE SALON DE MUSIQUE", in which Hildebrandt is also shown. Hildebrandt is characterized by his diverse references to music, film, literature, and art history, which flow into his art. His works are complex montages in which image associations from different areas merge into one another. One of his marks is the use of everyday materials, in particular obsolete audio cassettes and vinyl records. His works create a narrative that explores themes of memory and cultural significance. Hildebrandt invites us to take a new look at familiar objects by transforming them into poignant reflections and often expansive installations. The immateriality of music is a constant concern of the artist. Gregor Hildebrandt has been a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 2015 and plays an important role in contemporary art.

November 23, 2023 at 7 PM | Juergen Staack

On the occasion of our solo exhibition by Juergen Staack ABBERATION EROSION V1S10N, Juergen Staack was on site for an artist talk on November 24.

Juergen Staack is a German minimal art and conceptual artist based in Düsseldorf. Staack developed his own forms of expression in conceptual photography quite early on, focusing on the translatability of photography into language and the material fragility of the analog and digital photographic image in its fleetingness. To do so, he uses a wide variety of media, such as performance, sound, video, sculpture, and photography. Staack questions our perception in all areas and explores the boundaries of image production anew. Coincidence is important in Staack's works; the unknown, changing processes are important stylistic devices in his experimental photography.

Central to the space of our exhibition ABERRATION EROSION V1S10N was a pedestal with a colorful landscape photograph, which on closer inspection is made of fine quartz sand: it shows the demilitarized, guarded zone between North and South Korea. Sound vibration dissolves the fine quartz sand and causes the borders to blend into one another.

For more than 50 years, Magdalena Jetelová's cross-border work has challenged a changing audience to think and experience art differently. Art as a means of survival continues to characterize the autonomy of her condensed visual language, which - always stubbornly bypassing themes and taboos of the zeitgeist - continues to aim into unfathomable interstices.

Together with the artist we talked about her works such as Pacific Ring of Fire or Russzeichnungen, its genesis, motivations and developments in Jetelová's work.

Dr. Birgit Sonna

Munich-based artist Janina Roider integrates a multifaceted connection of elements from art history and her personal life into her work. Her pieces often feature self-portraits and play with various role models, such as Superwoman. By employing such iconic figures, Roider explores the construction of gender roles and stereotypes. She critically questions the established norms and expectations associated with these role models, reflecting on the different societal constraints they entail.

Additionally, her images, influenced by advertising aesthetics and public space posters, engage with consumer culture and the influence of mass media. By combining elements from art history and the advertising world, Roider raises questions about the manipulative strategies and ideals present in our society.

July 19, 2023 at 7 PM | Harm van den Dorpel, Dr. Annette Doms and Hanns Lennart Wiesner

Berlin-based artist Harm van den Dorpel combines technology, aesthetics, and narration in his works. Using digital media such as algorithmic art and data-driven installations, van den Dorpel creates artworks that continuously renew and develop their own "life" over time, without altering the original artistic approach. His works explore the interaction between human existence and the digital sphere through the composition of software and language, raising questions about identity and the influence of technology on our perception.

LIVE PERFORMANCE

June 22, 2023 at 6 PM | Jieun Park | Writing, Hiding, Disappearing, and Staying

During the performance, the artist uses red oil chalk to immortalize her past on one of our gallery windows. She inscribes significant moments and memories from her personal life and overlay the text with additional writing until it becomes unreadable and incomprehensible to anyone except herself, almost like a form of purification.

The essence of the performance will lie in the act of writing. Understanding the content being written during this process will not be the focus; instead, it will serve as a method for the artist to process emotions, especially those linked to the past, and a reminder of writing's significance as a fundamental component of social interactions.

Ilit Azoulay is known for her large-scale photomontages. Her works unveil unseen visual information and offer alternative vantage points within familiar fields of knowledge. Azoulay's art practice includes various components such as photography, conceptual art, and architectural interventions.
